Blended online First Aid and CPR certification course approved by Alberta OHS.

Each day thousands of Canadians go to work, schools, daycares, and public parks. Yet, when disaster strikes, many Canadians might not have the skills to perform lifesaving CPR or first aid. Yardstick has partnered with St. John Ambulance – Alberta Council to close this knowledge gap through a blended online certification program for Standard First Aid with CPR. Scheduled to launch on February 1, 2019, this course will reduce barriers to earning a First Aid certification in Alberta, such as travel costs and time, making it easier than ever to learn how to save a life.

The Yardstick and St. John Ambulance team released an awareness level series of First Aid and CPR courses in February of last year. Closely based on the in-class curriculum, these online courses were priced affordably and offered on Yardstick’s easy-to-navigate online learning platform, providing all Albertans with the opportunity to learn how to save a life from the comfort of their homes. Megan Doyle, AVP, eLearning innovation has worked closely with the subject matter experts at St. John Ambulance for almost two years to bring this lifesaving training to life. Her team has ensured that courses are immersive and competency-based, infused with “best practices in eLearning technology and instructional design – such as illustrations, videos, simulations, and built-in assessments – so that learners are confident in their skills and ready to draw on them in an emergency situation.”

The awareness courses have laid the foundation for the certification track program, which has just received official approval by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety for workplace First Aid training. Students can complete the online course at their own pace, then register for a one-day in-class assessment to validate their skills, delivered at any one of St. John Ambulance’s seven Training & Community Service centres across Alberta. The blended certification track will save learners at least a full day of class time.

Beverly Lafortune, vice president of training & community services of St. John Ambulance – Alberta Council, could not agree more “[t]oday, marks a seismic shift in the way SJA will deliver first aid training and this technology increases the opportunity for anyone to learn how to save a life.”
