Waterstone Human Capital has once again recognized Yardstick for best-in-class corporate culture

Yardstick Software Inc. was first recognized for the award in 2014

When co-founders Chris LaBossiere and Don Riep started Yardstick Software Inc. in 2005, they worked weekends and nights, developing and selling testing and training software out of Don’s basement. Today they run one of Canada’s fastest growing educational technology companies, supported by a staff of over 100 people in 4 offices across Canada.

Chris and Don realized early on that fostering actively engaged and empowered employees, and involving them in the operation and visioning of the company, was the best way they could sustain growth and innovation. That’s why the company has always placed so much emphasis on fostering a fantastic working culture, and why, after our first award in 2014, we are thrilled to once again be recognized as one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures.

A culture that drives growth and performance

When describing how companies are selected for this honour, Marty Parker, President and CEO of Waterstone Human Capital, comments: “At Waterstone we believe corporate culture drives performance and that it’s your organization’s greatest asset. What’s remarkable about this dynamic list of 2017 winners is their commitment to culture as a competitive advantage. They truly set the benchmark for cultivating, and sustaining, great cultures that ultimately drive their growth and performance. The 2017 winning organizations are to be admired for the diverse and impactful ways they make sure culture underpins all that makes them successful.

A culture that starts with the people

So how do we do it? Some might say they love working at here for the foosball tournaments or company-wide volunteer activities. Some might love the challenge and thrill of working for a fast-growing company that continuously out-performs its past performance, year after year.

But our success goes much deeper.

At the heart of our culture are the great people who come to work here every day – each of whom help sustain the positive energy and collaborative nature of our work environment.

We nurture our staff, our greatest asset, by incorporating a strong sense of shared ownership and values into our daily life. Our core values – Random Acts of Kindness, Embrace the Entrepreneurial Spirit, A Fearless Pursuit of Excellence, Customer Delight Heroes, and Honest & Empowered People – encourage staff to speak their minds, try new things, and above all treat one another with respect.

Another cornerstone of our culture and vision is our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG), which commits the entire company to uphold one single, laser-focused goal: Help a billion learners achieve competence by 2025. This goal has held true throughout times of restructuring and uncertainty, ensuring that everyone from leadership to part-time staff feel their work is valued and tied to our long-term organizational goals.

Despite aggressive growth (from 2 to 100 employees in 12 years!), these two pillars unite all staff across all offices and all divisions, giving our team a common language and shared sense of purpose. Together, they drive ongoing growth and success, for our company and for staff in their individual careers, making this an exciting and rewarding place to work!
